• KBS Brings the World’s First Terrestrial UHD TV

  • KBS, in collaboration with the nation’s terrestrial broadcasters, announced the start of the world’s first terrestrial UHD TV broadcasting at a ceremony held on 31 May 2017. As Chairman of Korean Broadcasters Association, Mr. Ko Dae-young, President & CEO of KBS, congratulated the watershed development of TV technology.  He said that terrestrial UHD TV in Korea grabs the attention of the US where the technical standards are created. Mr. Ko also emphasized that the broadcasters, home electronic appliance suppliers and the government should work together to make it universally accessible for the audience.

     

    The UHD broadcasting initially begins its service in Seoul and its metropolitan area, and is expected to expand to major cities with an aim to achieve full national coverage by 2021. As part of the celebration, KBS is planning to bring a range of UHD content for the audience including <The Imjinwaeran 1592>, <Producer>, and <Fight for My Way>. The proportion of UHD content is expected to increase up to 25% by 2021 from the current 5%. UHD TV has a number of smart features such as disaster warning system in addition to its four times higher picture quality. KBS expects that the UHD broadcasting will evolve through the Internet basis for the audience to enjoy a new interactive TV service.
