  • Variety described Mr. Ko Dae-young, President & CEO of KBS, as man of principle. He received the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Asian Television at the Asian Television Award 2016 in December.

  • Descendants of the Sun, one of the most successful drama of 2016 that took Asia by storm, was a winner of Best Drama Series at the Asian Television Award 2016 and of Excellent Korean Drama at the Seoul Drama Awards 2016.

  • Mom & Clarinet won the Gold World Medal of New York TV & Film Festival in the Documentary of Human Concerns category. The documentary looks into strugges of autistic children and their mothers.

  • A TV movie, Snowy Path, picked up Rockie Award at the Banff World Media Festival. Snowy Path is a drama that deals with a highly sensitive issue of the Korean sex slavery victims during the Great East Asia War.

  • Empire of the Sea, winner of the Platinum Remi from WorldFest Houston International Film Festival, proved the efforts of KBS as public service broadcaster to provide content that is educational and of high quality.

  • KBS programs across genres have achieved some of the most prestigious international awards in 2016, promoting high quality of the KBS’ program making now considered to be a driving force behind the Korean Wave.

     

    The news of winning the prizes started to arrive in April, first with Mom & Clarinet garnering the Gold World Medal of New York TV & Film Festival in the Documentary of Human Concerns category. Additionally, The Next Human won the Silver World Medal at the festival in the Documentary of Science & Technology. Mom & Clarinet, which portrayed struggles of autistic children and their mothers, also received the ABU (Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union) Prizes for the category of ABU Perspective in October.

     

    Empire of the Sea, dubbed as cultural history documentary with a focus on the Age of Exploration, picked up the Platinum Remi from WorldFest Houston International Film Festival. Adding to the growing list of award winning programs that includes Asian Corridor in Heaven, Noodle Road, Food Odyssey and Cultural Memory: Map, Empire of the Sea showcased a creative documentary genre that features historical events from the perspective of art and culture. In June, International URTI Grand Prix for Authors Documentary announced A Cruel Gift, a documentary that stepped inside lives of cancer patients through a series of up close and personal interviews, to win the Bronze Medal.

     

    As for KBS dramas, Unkind Ladies, The Wind Blows Where Your Heart is, and Jing Bi Rok: A Memoir of Imjin War collected awards. From an epic drama to weekday mini-series, a range of KBS dramas had honors at the stage of international awards. In addition, Snowy Path, a two-hour TV movie, was a surprising winner of the prominent Rockie Award at the Banff World Media Festival. Snowy Path is a drama that deals with a highly sensitive issue of the Korean sex slavery victims during the Great East Asia War. 

     

    The highlight comes in December when Descendants of the Sun was honored with Best Drama Series at Asian TV Awards, which also presented the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Asian Television to Mr. Ko Dae-young, President & CEO of KBS. In an interview with Variety, which described Mr. Ko as a man of principle, the president stressed the quality and popularity of KBS content exemplified in the recent hit dramas such as Love in the Moonlight; and mentioned the possibility of international co-production for dramas with Hollywood majors to produce blockbuster dramas to expand the horizon of KBS content. Mr. Ko also emphasized the principle of KBS as public service broadcaster to serve the public.

     

    In an era of endless competition for content, KBS is committed to producing a variety of dramas, documentaries and entertainment programs that only a public broadcaster can create. By continuing its efforts to create distinctive content that also enjoys popularity, KBS has been able to gain affection and support from audiences at home and abroad.
