  • BoA to Debut as Actress in China
  • [2005-06-07]
  • CEO and producer of SM Entertainment Lee Soo-man reported that singer BoA will debut as an actress during a recent interview he gave at SM`s main office in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul.

"Acting will not be BoA`s main job; she will juggle acting with singing. After long deliberation on how to promote a friendly image of BoA in the Asian market following her success in Japan, we decided that acting was the surest way for her to get closer to her audiences," said Lee.

BoA`s decision to combine singing with acting is quite unexpected as she has turned down numerous previous offers to star on television, choosing instead to create an image of an artist who is recognizable mainly in terms of music. But she has finally decided to try her hand in acting to lay a solid foundation for establishing her presence in the volatile Asian region as a popular multi-faceted artist.

"China has always been our primary goal for its vast market and abundant pool of human resources. Television dramas are the easiest and fastest way to spread BoA`s image as a preeminent star in China. We are currently in talks with the drama production company Eight Peaks. We want to make sure that this endeavor is planned perfectly," said Lee.

Eight Peaks, which produced the KBS hit series `Sorry, I Love You,` is considering several productions in which to cast BoA as the lead role. One of them is a drama based on the popular cartoon `Palace` (`Gung`) by cartoonist Park So-hee. This award-winning cartoon is a fictional version of history that might have taken place if there had been no oppression from Japan and other world powers and if Korea`s royal court had continued to exist. The cartoon depicts the inspiring adventures of an ordinary schoolgirl who one day becomes the Crown Princess.

BoA, who is currently recording her fifth album in Korea, will perform alongside TVXQ and G.O.D. at the `Hallyu Culture Festival` to be held June 11 at Universal Studios in Los Angeles.
