Director Hong Sang-su`s new movie `Cinema Story` became the only Korean film to be invited to the competition division of the 58th Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 11. According to Cannes Film Festival officials on May 4, `Cinema Story,` starring Kim Sang-kyung and Um Ji-won, was selected on that day, joining a list of competition-division films announced on April 19. As a result, the total number of Korean movies to participate in the Cannes Film Festival this year rose to six -- `Cinema Story` in the competition division and five films in the out-of-competition division, including `Bittersweet Life` in the Midnight Screening section, `The Bow` in the Uncertain Regard section, `Crying Fist` and `The People` in the Directors` Fortnight section, and `Walk On A Little More` in the Cinefoundation section. `Cinema Story` is the second work by director Hong Sang-su to make it to Cannes following `Woman Is The Future Of Man` last year. Also last year, Park Chan-ok`s `Old Boy` received the Jury`s Prize (Grand Prix) in Cannes, and the Palme d`Or went to Michael Moore`s documentary film `Fahrenheit 9/11.` `Cinema Story` is the first production of Hong`s company, `Jeonwonsa.` It is a story about a man named Dong-su (played by Kim Sang-kyung), who has been preparing to debut as a film director for ten years. One day, as he leaves a theater after watching a movie, he accidentally runs into Choi Young-sil (played by Um Ji-won), the main character of the movie he has just seen, and spends the entire day just like a movie. `Cinema Story` opens in Korea on May 27. Works that have been invited to the competition section of the Cannes Film Festival include Gus Van Sant`s `Last Days,` Wim Wenders` `Don`t Come Knocking,` Hou Hsiao-Hsien`s `Three Times` and Jim Jarmusch`s `Broken Flowers.` |
