  • 2NE1: ‘We Are the Best Thanks to Good Music’
  • [2011-08-05]
  • Many of 2NE1’s songs have become popular hits. They will begin activities in Japan after holding their first solo concert there.

During an interview held at a building of YG Entertainment located in Hapjeongdong on August 1, 2NE1 (CL, Sandara Park, Park Bom, and Kong Min Ji) answered the question asking the reason why they are popular -- and what is their own strength that distinguishes them from other girl groups -- by saying, “That is our good music.” Like this, 2NE1 is very confident in their music and that is why they used a completely new promotional strategy when they released their second mini album. They released songs in the album one by one online from last April. As a result, every song in their album such as “Don’t Cry,” “Lonely,” “I Am the Best,” “Hate You,” and the title song “UGLY” ranked atop the online music chart consecutively. CL said, “I like all songs that the producer Teddy made for us. We wanted to sing all of our songs one by one and we released music videos one after another. We chose this strategy because eventually all the songs were very good.”

Those songs belong to different genres. Group members explained, “Our songs in the album are all different and there is no link among them. We wanted to present a whole new appearance. We want to let people know that our group can sing every genre. We want to present an exciting appearance when we sing the song 'I Am the Best' and we want to gain sympathy from people by singing the song 'UGLY,' which is about a broken heart due to physical appearance. Even though the songs are different, we think that we can present 2NE1’s own image while singing.” They did not participate in producing their songs, which is different from Big Bang who belongs to the same agency and participates in making their songs. But members of 2NE1 actively give their opinions while their producer Teddy creates their songs. They stayed up all night to prepare their fashion and dance for their songs. But any song cannot be successfully sung if the singer cannot present the song properly on the stage. Group members, who look like ordinary girls living next door, can dominate the stage when they come up to the stage with their own strong charisma. CL said, “We have to practice very hard in advance to enjoy our performance on the stage. Enjoying means that we are able to perform without pressure on the stage. We practice dancing very hard as much as we can dance while closing our eyes. It is very lucky that none of us like to go outside (laugh).” Kong Min Ji said, “When we come up to the stage, CL looks like a lion, cute Sandara becomes a tough hip hop girl, and wild-eyed Park Bom presents an emotional voice. Everyone has reversal.”

2NE1 will hold their first solo concert entitled “Let’s Play” at Olympic Hall from August 26 to 28, and they seem to be prepared for releasing all their energy during the concert. CL said, “There will be an event for every performance. We want to show something that people cannot watch on TV and we want to fulfill the audience’s desire to enjoy our performance. We will sing all songs live, and a DJ will appear on the stage as we sing many electronic songs.” Sandara Park, who cut her nails very short, said, “I have practiced playing an acoustic guitar since May to perform on the stage. Members call me ‘Sancoustic,’ but I worry that my fingers do not work well.” Park Bom is preparing a classical performance. She delivered her anticipation, saying, “Since our debut in 2009, our goal has been to hold a solo concert. Not many female groups continue to hold concerts in Korea, but we want to become the beginning of a new concert trend.”
