  • [2012-09-17]
  • Singer Psy’s hit “Gangnam Style” has ranked 64th on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, setting a record for a Korean song on one of the main charts for Billboard Magazine. It’s the first time that a song recorded in Korean has entered the Hot 100 chart.

According to Billboard’s latest chart for the week of September 22nd that was released on September 13th, “Gangnam Style” ranked 64th place. The Hot 100 is a singles chart while the Billboard 200 is for albums.

“Gangnam Style” also ranked 2nd place on the Heatseekers Songs chart for new artists, 25th on the Digital Songs chart and 16th on Billboard Canada’s Hot 100 Chart.

Meanwhile, on the Youtube Chart, “Gangnam Style” beat songs by top stars such as One Direction and Justin Bieber placing first.

U.S. pop columnists were the first to break the news that Psy’s addictive song broke into the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Pop columnist Paul Grain wrote an article on Yahoo! Music saying, “Gangnam Style is a part of Psy’s 6th album and the name comes from a trendy area of Seoul”. Jeff Benjamin tweeted, “Gangnam Style debuted at 64th on the Billboard Hot 100 chart”.

Psy’s management YG Entertainment said Psy’s U.S. broadcast activities including his appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards and NBC influenced the song’s ranking on the Hot 100 chart. [Yonhap]
