  • Psy’s “Gangnam Style” Stays at #2 on Billboard Hot 100
  • [2012-10-04]
  • Psy’s “Gangnam Style” remained in second place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but will continue to reach for number one. The song has narrowed the gap with the current number one song by a large margin, heightening its chance for the top spot.

Billboard’s magazine, Billboard Biz announced on October 3rd that “Gangnam Style” has remained in second place on the Hot 100 chart. Remaining in first place for three consecutive weeks is Maroon 5’s “One More Night”.

As well as it’s ascent in the U.S. Billboard Chart, “Gangnam Style” became the first Korean song to hit #1 on the UK singles chart. It was aiming to become the first Korean song, and the second song by an Asian artist since Sakamoto Kyu’s “Sukiyaki” in 1963 to reach the top on the U.S. chart, but for now will have to be content with second place.

The song, which has led the world into a horse-riding dance craze, first entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart three weeks ago at 64th place and rose to 11th in just one week. The following week, it rose to #2 and was aiming for a first place finish this week. Billboard Biz said because of Maroon 5, Psy’s promise to dance with his shirt off if he reached number one had to be postponed.

However, the magazine added that “Gangnam Style” and “One More Night” are in a fierce competition that hasn’t been seen lately, adding that there still is a chance for “Gangnam Style” to reach number one.

This week’s point difference in “Gangnam Style” and “One More Night” was 500 points, which was narrowed down from last week’s 3,000 points. The point difference this week was the smallest since February 18th. Also, “One More Night” increased in points by less than one percent, while “Gangnam Style” rose by more than eight percent. Experts say the reason why “Gangnam Style” was unable to reach first place was because it lagged behind “One More Night” in the number of times it was played on the radio.

Billboard uses Nielson Soundscan to analyze the sales volume, digital music downloads while Nielson BDS analyzes how many times a song is played on the airwaves of over a thousand broadcast stations. Billboard Biz said “Gangnam Style” is ahead is sales but behind in the number of times it’s played on the radio which is why it remained in second place. It added that, “Clearly, PSY remains in contention for the Hot 100's coveted No. 1 rank next week.”

On Billboard Biz’s article last week titled, “PSY Watch: Will ‘Gangnam Style’ Reach No. 1 on the Hot 100”, based on the airplay so far and the projected sales from industry forecasts, it appears even more likely that “One More Night” will remain at number one.

Psy promised to take his shirt off and dance where there are a lot of people if “Gangnam Style” reached number one. However, during a solo concert in Jamsil Seoul on October 2nd, he said he would hold a free concert in front of Seoul City Hall regardless of the Billboard results.
Billboard releases over 70 charts each week in about every music genre. The main charts include the singles chart, Hot 100 and the album chart Billboard 200. The Hot 100 chart selects 100 of the most popular songs in all genres. [Yonhap]
