  • Psy’s ‘Gentleman’ Sets a New Record on YouTube on its First Day
  • [2013-04-17]
  • Psy’s new single “Gentleman”, which was released on April 13, set up a new record views in its first 24 hours on YouTube dwarfing the previous record set by Justin Bieber, major media (including Billboard.com, ABC, AFP) reported on April 15 (local time).

Billboard.com reported, “The Gentleman music video garnered 18,900,000 views on April 13 when it premiered. As the music video was released at 5 a.m. (based on the Pacific area standard time), the record was actually achieved less than 24 hours after the release.”

Billboard.com added, “It surpassed the previous 10.6 million record set by Justin Bieber and Nicki Minai’s ‘Beauty and a Beat’ in October 2012.”

The most viral video of all time on YouTube is “Kony2012”, a short film created by the non-governmental organization “Invisible Children” and released on March 5, 2012. The video was aimed at promoting the charity's "Stop Kony" movement to help have the African cult and militia leader and indicted war criminal arrested and thus help abolish African children soldiers and the sexual exploitation of minors. It racked up 30 million views in the first 24 hours of its release.

Billboard.com expected Gentleman will cruise to a new feat, reporting “It is prepared to make a splash on the Billboard charts that will be announced late in this week.”

ABC News of the U.S. also reported on Gentleman, saying “The Korean pop star Psy smashed another YouTube record held by Justin Bieber with his new single.”

AFP reported that the music video of Gentleman scored  44.5 million views in the 36 hours after the video’s release. It introduced in details Psy’s humor featured in the video.

AFP reported, “Psy is pulling chairs out from beneath beautiful women, making little kids cry and attempting to pull off sunbathing girls’ tops. Wearing his trademark sunglasses, Psy was dancing in many places in Seoul including a top class clothing shop, restaurant, swimming pool and library.”

As of 10 a.m. on April 16, the Gentleman music video received 76,820,000 views on YouTube and topped iTunes charts in 29 countries including Belgium, the Czech Republic, Mexico and Finland. [Yonhap]
