  • Hallyu Pioneer KBS World Celebrates the 10th Anniversary

  •  KBS World, KBS’s international broadcasting service, celebrated its 10th anniversary on July 1. KBS held a ceremony marking the occasion in the KBS New Building Hall on July 5.

     
    Many dignitaries from the national assembly, government and related organizations participated in the ceremony, including Park Byeong-sok, vice chairperson of the national assembly, Shin Hak-yong, chairman of the Education, Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee of the National Assembly, assemblyman Chong Byong-guk, who is concurrently co-representative of the National Assembly Hallyu Research Association,  Lee Jong-hyun, senior secretary to the president for public relations, Kim Choong-seek, vice chairperson of Korea Communications Commission and Lee Won-chang, president of KOBACO (Korea Broadcast Advertising Corp..
     
    In his commemorative speech, Gil Hwan-young, the KBS president, said that KBS World is playing a role of public duty to strengthen Korea's 'soft power' based on high-quality content produced by KBS.
     
    Beginning on July 1, 2003, KBS started serving audiences as a 24-hour satellite channel with the purpose of establishing a global network for the Korean people and spreading Korean culture and values to the world. Since then, the KBS World Channel has expanded its service coverage. It is now serving 52 million households and 230 million people in 88 countries across the world. It is playing a big role in expanding hallyu and informing the people of the world about Korea, based on wide-ranging KBS content in the field of news, drama, entertainment/music programs and culture/documentaries.
     
    KBS World continues to expand its broadcasting network through local cable and satellite broadcasters in foreign countries, and engage in bilateral communication with foreign audiences through SNS such as Facebook and Twitter, and has become the major hallyu-centered channel.. As of now the number of SNS subscribers connected with KBS World has reached 1,280,000.
     
    KBS World designated June 6 as “hallyu day’ to mark the anniversary and broadcasted a range of hallyu-related special programs. Over the weekend, KBS 1TV broadcasted three hallyu programs - the first part, Hallyu now; second part, 'Hallyu’s another name for KBS World' and the third part on the future of Hallyu.




     To celebrate the 10th anniversary of KBS World, various exhibitions showing the activities of KBS World over the last 10 years are being held starting July 5 through July 12.
