  • Princess Succeeds in Losing Weight
  • [2011-06-29]
  • Do not ever look down upon this woman who has a huge body. She is a princess of Baekje. The only flaw of this wise and good-natured princess is her weight. She is so gluttonous. Princess Hwapyung is deserted by her husband on the first night of her wedding and she decides to lose weight to obtain her husband’s love with strenuous efforts.

There has been no historical drama with this modern subject material. The Drama Special entitled “Princess Hwapyung's Weight Loss” that aired on June 26 at 11:15 pm on KBS 2TV was very similar to the popular movie entitled “Beautiful Girl,” in which Kim Ah Joong played the protagonist. The heavy Princess Hwapyung was played by the actress Yoo Jin, who was once a "fairy member" of the girl group S.E.S. At a café located near the annex building of KBS, the press conference for the “Princess Hwapyung’s Weight Loss” was held with the main cast members and staff members attending. Yoo Jin participated in the press conference with her bare face before putting on the special makeup for the large princess. For Yoo Jin, who will marry next month, the drama made a “huge” impact on her life regarding acting. Actors including Yoo Jin, Ryu Seung Soo, Choi Dae Chul, and Han Yoo Yi and director Song Hyun Wook participated in the press conference. Director Song introduced the drama, saying, “It tells a story of a princess who has everything but a good appearance, and she puts forth strenuous efforts to lose weight to obtain love.”

It might seem to be a drama that criticizes this appearance-oriented society, but the director does not seem to deliver this serious meaning. He emphasized, “This drama is exciting and you can enjoy it very comfortably.” Yoo Jin had to put on special makeup from very early in the morning until late at night to transform into a heavy princess, and she played the character enthusiastically even though she could not eat well due to the special makeup. A former idol girl group member, she has transformed herself into an actress and presented splendid acting with her appearances in the dramas such as “Loving You” and “Bread, Love and Dream,” and it was her first time to appear in a historical drama. She expressed her feelings that she could automatically become very calm after wearing Hanbok. She spent almost four hours for the special makeup each day and acted all day long. For eight days while filming, she even stayed a longer period of time as a heavy princess than her original figure. She said that her fiance Ki Tae Young once visited the set and was surprised at her perfect transformation into an overweight princess. She asked him whether she could stay as a heavy girl, and Ki Tae Young answered that he had no problems even if Yoo Jin was a heavy woman, and he would exercise together with her if she were that heavy.

Actor Ryu Seung Soo played a mysterious man who helped the princess lose her weight. During the press conference, Ryu Seung Soo presented his witty and excellent ability to host by encouraging reporters’ questions and helping other actors answer those questions in a witty and comic way of speaking. Ryu Seung Soo, who has presented comic acting so far, praised himself that he could present good acting even in a melodrama. Asked whether he would date a woman who has everything but appearance like princess Hwapyung, he answered without hesitation, “I would not,” and his answer created laughter. He answered again, “I would help her lose weight and make her as beautiful a woman as Yoo Jin, and then I would definitely go out with her.”

Actress Han Yoo Yi played a court lady named Hong Dan. She debuted with her appearance in the Super VJ Model Contest, and this drama was her second drama appearance after the drama “Midas,” and it was her first time to appear in a historical drama. She played the sole evil character in this drama. She seduced the princess’ husband with her beautiful appearance. Director Song explained that Hong Dan was not an evil character, but the most realistic character in the drama. The production director of “Princess Hwapyung’s Weight Loss,” Song Hun Wook, directed dramas such as “Hot Blood” and “Legend of the Patriots.” Making a historical TV drama as a one-act play is actually not an easy task. The original background of the drama was the Joseon Dynasty period, but he changed it to Baekje due to the production budget. He said, “We could save some production budget by changing the background of the drama to Baekje because we could use props, set, and costumes from the drama ‘The King of Legend.’” He also revealed that filming a modern drama like “Romance Town” usually costs up to 50 million won per week, but he could film this drama with only 30 million won budget per week. This historical drama could be created despite these production difficulties, and it was actually very natural for producing a one-act play. Even though the drama is a low-budget comedy drama airing late at night, it was highly anticipated and attracted many viewers.
