  • Hyun Mi Talks About Her Marriage to Lee Bong-jo
  • [2009-06-12]

  • [TV Report] Singer Hyun Mi has talked about her marriage to composer Lee Bong-jo. Hyun Mi appeared on the KBS TV show “Morning Live With Nam & Choi” on June 5. When the emcees asked her if she knew that Lee was already married at the time, Hyun said, “We were deeply in love and even set our wedding date, but it was postponed several times.”

Hyun explained that, back then, she was pregnant with their child, but Lee didn’t even have an ID number because the country was coping with the repercussions of the Korean War. Lee told Hyun to have her baby by any means, and she complied because he was her first man. But when Hyun was seven months pregnant, Lee’s wife showed up. She was four years Lee’s senior.

Hyun said, “She told me that she was Mr. Lee’s wife. I felt very sorry for her. I told her confidently that I had received a marriage proposal from Lee and that I was seven months pregnant and didn’t know anything about her. She must have been very confused. In hindsight, what I said back then must have hurt her a lot.” At that point, Hyun suggested to Lee that they get rid of their yet unborn child, but Lee refused to do so because he wanted to marry her. He told her, “Because you and I are both musicians and because I want to do music all my life, we must be together forever.” Hyun says that’s how she gave birth to her son, Goni, who is the eldest grandson in Lee’s family.

Hyun and Lee continued to live as a couple even after her debut as a singer in 1962 with the song “Night Fog.” Hyun said, “I didn’t know anything about a divorce back then because I was too young and I just did as he told me. Our second son, Young-jun, was born four years later. When my husband told me that he had divorced his wife, I just said, ‘Okay.’” But when she later learned that he hadn’t divorced his wife yet, she left home. Hyun said, “I felt sorry for him because he lived alone for 13 years before he died.”
